Reflexology

The Origins of Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient art of healing — believed to have been first practised over 4,000 years ago by Indian, Egyptian and Chinese cultures. In 1913 Dr William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat surgeon, introduced zone therapy to the West. This was further developed and refined in the 1930's by Eunice Ingham, a therapist, into what is known today as foot reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body.

How Does it Work?
The feet being at the extreme end of the body, means that they are furthest from the heart, and therefore blood and lymph from the feet must flow uphill against gravity — as with any stream, heavy particles will settle as sediment and crystals in the tissues may form. If we think of our feet as the foundation of our body, then we get a pretty good picture of how important they are to our well-being.

If we don't have a firm foundation, then like any building, the whole structure suffers.

There are approximately 7,200 nerve endings in each foot — perhaps this fact more than any other explains why we feel so much better when our feet are treated. Nerve endings in the feet have extensive interconnections through the spinal cord and brain, and lead to all areas of the body.

The foot is a complete mirror of the body, and the whole area is worked upon in order to endeavour to bring about total balance of the system — equilibrium.

On certain occasions, a reflexologist will work with the hands, where a similar set of nerve endings exist to those in the feet, and will help to diagnose or confirm certain ailments.

What Does it Do?
Reflexology removes toxins, improves circulation and generally tones up the body. It is an extremely relaxing experience for both the sick and the healthy and has to be experienced to be appreciated. The experience of a treatment usually brings a sense of well being and vitality, invaluable to us all these days.

Who Can Benefit From Reflexology?
Those who suffer from acute and chronic conditions such as: ME; Migraine; Depression; P.M.T; Menopausal problems; Back/neck pain; Asthma; Diabetes; Arthritis and Rheumatism. The feet (or hands) are treated without the use of drugs or needles — a qualified reflexologist will only use their hands. An imbalance found within the body can usually be helped, and this assists the body back to its natural state, therefore encouraging a process of natural healing.

An increasing number of people have chosen to use this natural therapy as a way to 'chill-out'.

The Effects of a Reflexology Treatment
Many clients experience a warm glow, or a sensation in the body related to the area being worked on during treatment. It is advisable to drink plenty of water after a treatment — thus helps to flush through the toxins that are being released from the system. You will also usually feel very relaxed. Reflexology encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace.

The Association of Reflexologists
The Association of Reflexologists is a governing body, founded in 1984. Its members can be recognised by the letters M.A.R. after their name. The aim of the Association is to help maintain a high standard of practice and patient care, and to promote reflexology. Members are qualified therapists who abide by the Associations code of practice and ethics. They do not claim to treat specific ailments or diagnose, but to treat the whole person by stimulating and balancing the body.

Reiki

Reiki (pronounced Rey-Key) is a Japanese word that means 'universal life energy'. The word Rei means universal, present, everywhere. Ki is the life-force - the non-physical vitality that gives life to all living things and can be activated for the purpose of healing. When the life-force - Ki - is low or perhaps you are stressed, you are susceptible to illness. When your life-force - Ki - is high you have more immunity.

The Reiki practitioner is used as a channel for the Ki energy to be passed through their hands to the recipient, activating the body's natural ability to heal itself while restoring the natural balance. The Ki energy goes to exactly where it is needed, in the exact amount that is required. This helps to release blocked energy and to cleanse the body of toxins - and works to create a state of balance on the physical, mental or emotional levels, in order of priority.

Reiki is a very powerful therapy, outwardly very subtle but inwardly very profound because it goes to the deeper levels of consciousness where ill-health has its roots. It combines with, and increases the effectiveness of, both orthodox medical care and complimentary therapies.

A treatment lasts for one hour, or longer. It can take place with the recipient lying, fully clothed, on a healing couch - or sitting in a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands on specific energy centres over the whole body, holding each position for a few minutes. There is no pressure, which makes it ideal for treating all age groups; for pregnant women and those recovering from surgery. The energy flows to the source of imbalance, and not only to the manifesting symptoms.

Reiki has produced remarkable improvements in physical and emotional health - from clearing of minor symptoms the recovery from major illness. You may feel a pleasant sensation of warmth or gentle tingling in the area being treated. As the energy comes into balance, stress and tension is released and there is a deep sense of relaxation and feeling of well-being.
